How to Drill Into a Mirror (Quick Guide)

Drilling a hole in a mirror is an effective way to ensure it is mounted in place securely. 

However, while it is a good long term solution, it’s important that the hole is drilled delicately, using the correct technique and tools. 

Otherwise, the glass might crack or shatter, which could pose a significant safety concern.

Tools and equipment required to drill into a mirror

In order to precisely and safely drill into a mirror, the following tools and equipment are needed:

• A diamond-tipped drill bit – These are precisely designed to ensure safe cutting through difficult materials, like glass. (Alternatively, a carbide-tipped glass drill bit will also work). 
• An electric drill, with variable speed settings – This will give you sufficient control, allowing you to start drilling slowly.
• Masking tape – By positioning this on top of the area where you’re drilling, you can keep the bit stable, and reduce the risk of it slipping.
• Water spray bottle – This can be used to keep the drill bit cool, and prevents overheating.
• Marker pen – To mark out the drilling point on your tape.
• Clamps – To secure the mirror in place when you’re drilling, without the risk of it cracking.
• Safety glasses and gloves – To protect you from any injuries caused by loose glass. 

How to drill through a mirror

To safely and accurately drill through a mirror, the following steps are recommended. 

• Clean the mirror. Then, add masking tape to the area where the hole will be drilled, and mark the exact drilling point using a pen. 
• Secure the mirror in place, using the clamps. 
• Start drilling into the mirror, setting the drill at a slow speed. Ensure the bit is set perpendicular to the glass. Consistently apply water to the area using the spray bottle, to keep it cool. 
• Gently and gradually increase the pressure, but don’t use excess force, as this can easily cause the glass to crack. 
• If the size of the hole needs to be increased, increase the size of the drill bit gradually until the required size is achieved. 
• When the hole is drilled, gently wipe away any remaining glass dust, and discard. 

Alternatives to drilling

If you would rather mount your mirror without having to drill into it, there are other effective ways that you can secure it in place. 

These include using: 

• Mirror adhesives – Such as liquid adhesives, or double-sided mirror tape. These are secure, easy to use, and are specifically designed for use on mirrors.  
• Mirror clips – These securely position and support the glass, without damaging it. 
• Getting a mirror cut to size – More on this below.
