Glass walls, partition walls & glass flooring

Planning permission –  On the whole you shouldn’t find that you need planning permission for these things, unless your building is listed or there are certain restrictions in place.

Health and safety regulations – The main consideration here is fire safety. As long as you still have a clear means of escape then everything should be fine. One thing to remember is, if your floor is at low level e.g. within 800mm of floor level, then it should be made from toughened or laminated glass for extra safety.

Minimum thickness – Generally speaking there are no strict minimum thickness measurements to go by. This will depend on the size of the pane of glass and the way it fits into the edges.

Type of glass – As mentioned previously, toughened and laminated glass are the best materials to use for partition walls and these can either be tinted or clear, depending on your preference. Laminated glass can be sound proofed with an additional acoustic interlayer, ideal for an office environment.  For glass floor, laminated is your best option and it’s worth opting for a non-slip surface for extra safety.
