Broken Windows: What Should I Do?

Whether it’s extreme weather or perhaps accidental drunken frolics over the Christmas period, windows can become broken, and if they do, then you can be left in a rather tricky situation – especially when the weather’s bad during the winter.

In order to prevent the elements from entering your property, and to keep everything secure and as safe as possible, it’s important to know what to do, should you find yourself with broken windows on your hands.

• Secure the surrounding area, making sure no one comes within the vicinity of the broken glass.
• Collect any visible pieces of loose glass and double-bag it before putting it in the bin.
• Thoroughly sweep and vacuum the floor. If there are still small shards of glass, use sticky tape to help collect them up.
• Wearing a pair of gloves to protect your hands (preferably heavy duty ones), feel over the window surface. If it is only cracked and not missing chunks of glass, add slight pressure to see if it is weak enough to completely shatter.
• Once you have assessed this, if it feels sturdy enough, begin to add packing tape over the cracked area on both sides of the pane of glass.
• If there are any smaller holes where actual glass is missing, use clear nail varnish to patch them up. Once one layer has dried, apply another one to add more strength.
• Any holes that are too large for nail polish, or tape, need to be measured as the pane will need to be completely covered up with layers of thick, clear plastic or plywood. If you can’t get hold of any plastic, then black bin bags can be used as an alternative.
