8 Top Tips to Brighten up a Dark Room

Now that the nights are drawing in, and the winter evenings are getting darker for longer, the ultimate home design goal is to create cosy, snug and light spaces. Your home should be light and bright, even when it’s dark outside.

So, to improve the lighting of your rooms, and eliminate darkness without the lights being too bright or dazzling, we’ve rounded up our top eight tips to lift the light levels in your room in a subtle, super effective way.

1. Hang a large mirror in the room – this is a really innovative way to bring some extra natural light into a room. This is because the mirror’s reflection will effectively spread the light that enters the room. Choose a particularly dark area of your wall, and hang up a large mirror to brighten up this space.

2. Switch your solid door for one with glass panels – if your room has no windows, or only a small restricted one, this is bound to massively restrict the amount of light that can come in. You can effectively bring in more light by adding a door that features glass panels.

3. Limit the amount of furniture in the room – the more spacious the room, the more easily natural light is able to spread and fill the room. Plus, less shadows are created, so a decline in light levels is less immediately obvious.

4. Choose coloured paint carefully – the paler the paint that you use, the better. These soft pastels and pale, subtle colours will bring their own light and freshness to your room.

5. Opt for a white ceiling – it’s an easy and stylish way to brighten up a dark room.

6. Add white furnishings – building on the above point, white additions in general bring lightness to a room in a subtle, natural way. Whether it’s white walls, switching darker picture frames for white ones, or making the curtains white, these swaps will quickly limit the darkness in your room.

7. Add thin black features as a point of contrast – by adding straight, thin black lines (for example, in picture frames), you can add contrast to all of the white in your home decor, which will enhance the white and make the room extra chic.

8. Daylight bulbs – rather than harsh blue bulbs, you can buy specific bulbs that possess a soft, yellow light (also known as ‘true white’ light bulbs) that better recreates daylight.

At this time of year in particular, the last thing that you want to find when you’ve come home from a day at work (or a walk out in the cold) is to be greeted by a dark and uninviting room with no natural light.
